pollution credit

pollution credit
Market-based pollution control credit program, allowing firms which reduce their levels of pollution below what is required by law, to sell the difference between the maximum amount allowed and their current amount produced to other firms. The economic logic is that firms which can easily reduce pollution will do so, while those firms for whom it would be expensive to reduce pollution will purchase credits instead.

American business jargon. 2014.
